Shilajit FAQ
What is Shilajit?
Shilajit is a complex, organic material formed over millennia. It's the result of the gradual decomposition of plants, microorganisms, and rocks in the harsh environment of the Altai & Himalayan Regions. Humic substances, fulvic acid, and over 80 different minerals make up this sticky resin.
The exact formation process is still not fully understood, but it's believed that plant matter gets compressed between layers of rock. Over time, microbial activity breaks down the organic material, and minerals from the surrounding rocks are leached in. This process is further aided by the freezing and thawing cycles that occur at high altitudes.
The semi-liquid Shilajit then oozes out of cracks in the rocks, painstakingly collected by hand, typically during the summer months. The traditional method involves scraping the resin from rock faces, then purifying it through a filtration process.

What are the health benefits of Shilajit?
Shilajit is traditionally used to enhance vitality and overall wellness. Its potential benefits include:
- Boosting energy: May improve mitochondrial function, increasing cellular energy production.
- Supporting immunity: Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties may strengthen the immune system.
- Promoting cognitive health: may protect against oxidative stress and inflammation in the brain.
- Aiding nutrient absorption: Fulvic acid enhances the bioavailability of minerals and nutrients.
- Supporting bone and joint health: Mineral content may contribute to bone density and joint function.
- Combatting anaemia: Shilajit can potentially help with anemia due to its high mineral content, particularly iron. Since iron deficiency is a common cause of anemia, supplementing with shilajit could help improve iron levels, thereby supporting red blood cell production and combating symptoms of anemia like fatigue and weakness.
Is Shilajit safe to consume?
Shilajit is generally considered safe when used as directed and sourced from reputable suppliers. However:
- Quality matters: Impurities like heavy metals can be present in low-quality shilajit. It is important to always ensure that your shilajit source has tested for heavy metals, contaminants and pollutants.
- Consult a healthcare provider: Those with conditions like hemochromatosis or kidney issues, or those on medications, should seek advice before use.
- Avoid overuse: Excessive intake may cause side effects like digestive upset,
